News and Updates

June 2010

  • Can you believe it is almost July? June has gone by in a flash! Between construction on the lodge, different groups renting our site, and preparation for Camp Kaleidoscope (which was a great success!) we haven't had a minute to catch our breath!
  • Cabins are filling quickly for Camp Common Ground, in fact there is already a waiting list for Week 1. Don't hesitate to call and register today: 1-800-430-2667!

May 2010

  • The site is ready for the summer! We have had quite a busy May here at Common Ground preparing for the start of our season. Liz Fukushima held a meditation retreat weekend at CGC in early May and we hosted The VT Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence twice later in the month. Both groups relaxed, enjoyed our cabins, and loved our site!
  • Although the Spring Newsletter should have reached your mailboxes long ago, it is now on the web so you can read it again if you want. Click here to view it.
  • We broke ground for our new eco-lodge on May 24th! When you arrive for your camp or program this summer, check it out.

March/Arpil 2010

  • AllEarth Renewables is preparing our site for 5 new solar trackers, to be installed this month. With this solar array we’ll be 100% sun-powered, allowing for our facility’s growing and current needs (so to speak). Whatever solar power we don’t use will go into the grid, supplying energy for our neighbors. Just one more reason to look forward to the long, sunny days of summer!
  • The mobile home is gone! A truck towed it off our property, and now there is just a slab with a view. Left behind is the front porch, which will make a dandy platform for tents, and the back porch, which we plan to re-use as a woodshed for the new lodge.
  • Speaking of the new lodge, construction documents have been circulated to a few local contractors who are bidding on the project. Carol Stenberg, our architect, has created some fantastic plans for the building, which jive completely with our commitment to green design. Click here for the footprint and click here to view the elevations, to give you an idea of what the building will look like. Please share your comments and ideas with us about this building! Once the building program has been finalized for this year, we’ll fill you in on some of the sustainable features of the building.
  • The wood harvest is complete, so we’ve gathered up the pine and hemlock, and sent it to the local mills. They’ll dry and cut it so we can use it for rafters, siding and interior paneling. Hardwood logs - red maple, black birch, red oak, white ash and beech – will be milled for trim, shelves, and benches. That large pile of rocks we excavated from the pond will be put to use in the lodge as well, as support and to line a portion of the foundation.
